Our first step was to design and develop a mobile app for Hómini’s sales team. Built with React Native, the app runs seamlessly on both iOS and Android devices, and offers two simple, powerful ways to find a product:
By text, using Algolia’s search engine to instantly find items based on keywords like type, material, or SKU.
By photo, with an AI-powered feature that lets a salesperson snap a picture of a product and see visually similar results in seconds.
The image search is powered by a machine learning system, fine-tuned for Hómini’s needs. When a new photo is taken, the system compares it and returns the most similarly looking products-fast and accurately.
Of course, the app is just the front end of a much more complex system. Behind the scenes, we built a robust backend that handles everything from authenticating users to managing product data and interacting with the ML model. We followed a microservices architecture so the system could scale smoothly and adapt as needs evolved.
To keep the data up to date, we developed ETL pipelines that periodically pull product images from their storage and product metadata from Hómini’s ERP. This data is used to refresh both the Algolia index and the product identification system, ensuring that search results stay relevant as the catalog grows.
Once the mobile app was live, the impact was immediate. Sales staff could assist customers faster, searches were quicker, and the entire shopping experience felt smoother. Guided by the results, Hómini came back to us just a few months later with a new request: bring that same search experience to a website. In around a month, we delivered a new web app using Algolia to power real-time product discovery online.
At the same time, we enhanced the backend to unify data from multiple platforms. We also added a feature to automatically predict product attributes based on existing data-saving hours of manual work and ensuring consistency across their catalog.
Hómini now has a fully integrated system that improves both in-store and online product discovery. Salespeople are faster, customers are happier, and internal processes are far more efficient.
But the impact didn’t stop there. As the project evolved, our solution also simplified how products are uploaded and managed in their ecommerce platform-streamlining a previously manual and time-consuming process.
What started as a solution to reduce customer wait times turned into a full digital transformation, one that elevated both the sales floor and the back office. And we’re proud to have built a foundation that Hómini can keep growing on.
